The drumming traditions from Ghana and Haiti represent a threshold to the rhythmic vitality of virtually all contemporary Western music. These rich and complex traditions express the vitality and sophistication of African music as well as the all – included spirit of community music making.

In this class we will learn rhythms from the southern regions of Ghana and rhythms from the Voudon tradition in Haiti which have their roots in West and Central Africa. The classes will focus on ensemble proficiency while providing ample guidance on individual technique and musical understanding.
