Intro to Drumming - WORKSHOP - For Women

Hand / Stick Drum style drumming

No experience necessary

Have you wanted to try drumming? You can do it!

Learn to drum in one session....yes really, in one session.

Drumming is accessible. You will be a part of a drum piece in 60-90 minutes. We will explore both hand and stick style drumming.

Months:

January, March, May, July, September, November

Drums e.g djembes, conga’s, snares, toms, Surdo's (bass drums) will be included.

For Women - Saturday (2nd) 2:00-4:00 pm (every other month)

Co-Ed - Saturday (4th) 2:00-4:00 pm (every other month)) - Separate listing under "offerings"

This class will introduce you to technique training for a variety of drum styles (e.g djembes, conga’s, snares, toms, and bass drums). Technique practice and playing musical pieces are used to teach you about the art of drumming. African, Brazilian, Caribbean and American rhythms will be included.

This class offers technique training for a variety of drum styles that use both hands and sticks (e.g djembes, conga’s, snares, toms, and bass drums). Technique practice and playing musical pieces are used to teach you about the art of drumming. African, Brazilian, Caribbean and American rhythms will be included. In addition, the art of performing will be explored.

In addition, the art of performing will be emphasized.

Women have had a long history of playing the Dun Duns. Duns and Djembes make beautiful music together. Both traditional and contemporary pieces will be shared.

A variety of drums will be available to share or bring your own

The drum is a wonderful wellness tool. Come and explore how the sounds of drums and other percussion instruments will help you release any stress from life and leave you in a peaceful state of being. The session will include both instruction and self expression drumming.

Before the meeting (by email or phone):

1) We will determine the goal of the lesson. This ensures that we have the music and instruments that we need ready on lesson day.

Samples of Goals:

-Work on a drum part (of a piece)

-Work on understanding the arrangement of a piece

-Work on transitions in a piece (moving in and out of breaks within a piece)

2) I will send a video link with information that relates to the upcoming lesson to enable you to practice and prepare for the lesson.

We will work together to accomplish the goals we had set.

What a Group Lesson will include!

I will demonstrate or review a technique or part and then you practice (while on mute). Then, I will have a person unmute and I will listen to how the technique or part sounds and offer suggestions to improve if needed.

Drummers that care about the Future of Trees!  The Celebration is hosted by Smiling Drum Studio.  This initiative was started by Ubaka Hill (nationally known drummer) in 2012. Our intention is to create a mindful model for a sustainable future for drums by providing a sustainable future for trees.”  “For the Love of Trees and Drums”. 

Each year we pick a tree to honor -                                                                          This year we are honoring the Oak tree and the life it sustains!

This FREE “Family Friendly”, OPEN TO THE PUBLIC (open house format) Drum happening will be held:

Art piece by Craig David located in Cherokee Park - “Peace Table”
The Peace Table is made of Red Granite  (benches)  and banded taconite (table). It is an interactive piece - It encourages people of our community and the world to begin conversing with one another, talking and listening to one another, a step to peace.

TREE PROJECT - currently Craig David is doing a project featuring black and white photographs of West Side Neighborhood residents and the trees they love!  It will honor and celebrate the West Side’s great trees and the people who love them.

He is looking for people to participate in this project! - If you live on the West Side of St. Paul and have a favorite tree, contact him :). 

The exhibit, called ARBOREOUS TREEKEEPERS will open Saturday, December 6th, 2025 at Villa Del Sol Community, 88 Cesar Chavez St. St Paul.
